Uber, Lucid, and Nuro Robotaxis Coming to the Bay Area in 2026

Technology

Get ready, Bay Area! It looks like Uber's planning to roll out its robotaxi service in 2026, teaming up with Lucid and Nuro. If you remember, there were talks about this back in July, with Uber aiming to deploy a whole fleet of self-driving Lucid cars, all powered by Nuro's smart driving software.

Apparently, it's not just a simple partnership. Uber's actually investing in both Nuro and Lucid, which I see as a serious commitment. These robotaxis will be Lucid Gravity SUVs running on Nuro's Level 4 autonomy system, and you will find them exclusively through the Uber app.

But before you jump into a driverless ride, the companies are building an "Engineering Test Fleet" – over 100 robotaxis to make sure everything runs smoothly and safely. Nuro will be in charge of testing and making sure the robotaxis are safe through simulations, closed course testing, and on-road testing.

It's interesting to note that Uber will fully own and operate this service. After selling its own self-driving division in 2020, they've been collaborating with various self-driving companies. For example, in 2025, they partnered with Waymo in Austin and Atlanta, plus announced plans to work with Momenta in Europe and Volkswagen. This partnership with Lucid and Nuro seems to be a strategic move to solidify their presence in the self-driving market.
