Sony's Xperia 10 VII Adopts a Pixel-Like Camera Bar Design

Mobile Technology

Sony's just unveiled the Xperia 10 VII, and it's sporting a fresh look that might remind you of something... or rather, someone. Yep, the camera bar is here, making its debut on a Sony phone after years of the brand sticking to its own distinct style. For years, Sony has kept its cameras vertically aligned. Now, it seems they are changing this up, with only rare exceptions.

This new mid-range Android device is headed to the UK, Europe, and Asia, and I have to say, I'm really digging the new design! The horizontal camera setup, housed in that pill-shaped bar, definitely gives off Pixel vibes, something even Apple's doing now. It's a welcome change from Sony's previous designs, which, let's be honest, were starting to feel a little stale. The matte plastic body comes in black, white, or turquoise.

From the front, though, it's classic Sony. We're talking about those noticeable bezels above and below the screen. While it might not be the most modern look, it does mean you get front-facing stereo speakers, which is a plus! And while the 6.1-inch display might seem compact, those bezels mean the phone isn't quite as small as you'd expect.

However, there are some classic features that the company maintains. A 3.5mm headphone jack is present, for example, along with the expandable microSD storage.

Under the hood, it's a pretty standard mid-range affair. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chipset isn't going to blow anyone away, and the dual rear cameras (50MP main and 13MP ultrawide) are what you'd expect at this price point. Sony claims the 5,000mAh battery should last two days, but wired charging only. It also has a side-mounted single-stage camera shutter button.

Despite some of its limitations, I think this redesign is a good sign. Sony's reiterated that Xperia phones are important to them, and I'm hoping this new design language makes its way to their flagship phones next year. The Xperia 10 VII is priced at €449 / £399 (around $530) and is available for preorder now in the UK and Europe. Shipping starts September 19th.
