It's always fascinating to hear about startups that seemingly come out of nowhere and explode onto the scene. Runpod, an AI app hosting platform, is one of those stories. Started by Zhen Lu and Pardeep Singh, they've hit a staggering $120 million annual revenue run rate in just four years.

The journey? Totally wild. It all began with a cryptocurrency mining hobby that quickly turned sour. But, rather than giving up, these two friends decided to repurpose their hardware for something a lot more interesting: AI development.

Back in late 2021, after realizing their Ethereum mining operation wasn't panning out as expected, they pivoted. They'd already spent around $50,000 on specialized computers, so finding a new use was crucial. It's a classic case of "necessity is the mother of invention," right?

Before ChatGPT and DALL-E 2 were even a thing, they recognized how clunky the software was for working with GPUs. So, they built Runpod to make AI app hosting faster and easier.

They didn't have marketing expertise, so they turned to Reddit. Free access to AI servers in exchange for feedback? Genius! This led to beta users, and eventually, paying customers. Nine months later, they'd quit their jobs and hit $1 million in revenue.

Their initial reluctance to seek venture capital is also interesting. It wasn't until later, when they realized they needed more capacity than their basement could provide, that they considered outside funding. A Reddit post caught the eye of Dell Technologies Capital, which eventually led to a $20 million seed round.

Today, Runpod boasts 500,000 developers as customers, including major players like Replit, OpenAI, and Zillow. While the competition is fierce, they see themselves as a dev-centric platform, empowering the next generation of AI developers. And they aren't wrong!
